Kull oli eesti ökoloog,
Tartu
Ülikooli rakendusökoloogia
professor, Botaanika ja ökoloogia instituudi juhataja, Alus- ja
rakendusökoloogia tippkeskuse juht. Juhatas ka Ökoloogia
Instituudi Tartu
osakonda. Ta
oli metsaökosüsteemide ökofüsioloogia parimaid
tundjaid ning enimtsiteeritavaid ökoloogiateadlasi maailmas.Olevi sündis 22. juunil 1955 Rakveres. Käis Tartu 10. koolis, ja Tartu 1. Keskkoolis. Ta õppis Tartu Ülikoolis kaks aastat füüsikat (1973-1975) ja seejärel (kaugõppes) metsamajanduse erialal Eesti Põllumajanduse Akadeemias, mille lõpetas 1981. a. Õppimise ajal töötas Olevi Eesti Metsainstituudi looduskaitse laboris August Ördi rühmas (1975–1979). 1979. a. Zooloogia ja Botaanika Instituuti Toomas Frey taimeökoloogia rühma (ZBI süsteemökoloogia sektor) tööle tulles sai ta ülesandeks käivitada puude gaasivahetuse uurimine. Töö koondus esmalt puude hingamise uurimisele. Aastal 1983, kui T. Frey pidi oma töörühma osaga minema ZBIst Tartu Ülikooli, asus sinna (TÜ ökosüsteemide labor) teadurina ka Olevi. Kandidaadiväitekirja "Süsihappegaasi omastamine harilikul kuusel" kaitses ta 26. veebruaril 1987. Iseseisvat teadusrühma asus Olevi juhtima aastast 1990, mil temast sai vastloodud Ökoloogia Instituudi Tartu osakonna juhataja. Aastal 1999 valiti Olevi Kull Tartu Ülikooli korraliseks professoriks rakendusökoloogia alal. Ta asus seeläbi juhatama TÜ botaanika ja ökoloogia instituudi ökofüsioloogia õppetooli. Oma veebilehel tutvustab see end nii: “Ökofüsioloogia õppetoolis tehtav teadustöö hõlmab põhiliselt kolme valdkonda: "klassikaline" taimede ökofüsioloogia, metsaökosüsteemide süsinikuringe ja globaalsete kliimamuutuste mõju taimkattele. Seega saavad meie uurimistöös kokku taimeökoloogia mastaabiskaala kaks otsa, autökoloogia ja füsioloogia piirimail tegutsev ökofüsioloogia ja süsteemiökoloogia". 2002. aastal loodi ühena kümnest Eesti teaduse tippkeskusest Alus- ja rakendusökoloogia keskus, mille juhiks ja kokkupanijaks oli Olevi Kull. Samuti juhtis ta selle keskuse juurde loodud Ökoloogia ja keskkonnateaduste doktorikooli. Aastast
2004 oli Olevi ka TÜ Botaanika ja ökoloogia instituudi
juhataja. Järvseljal rajas Olevi eksperimentaalse
metsa
uurimisala, mis oma tehniliselt keerukuselt ületab kõik
varem Eestis tehtu.
Suur reguleeritava õhuniiskusega katse Järvseljal
jääb ilmselt nägema mitut
